Biographical Information
           Paul McDonald Smith OAM, FVAS, FRSA (Lond.)



    Born  Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1956 and educated at Scotch College, Paul McDonald Smith has
    practiced as a professional artist since 1978. Broadly influenced by  the teachings of Max Meldrum and
    more particularly his  mentor Sir William Dargie C.B.E., Paul's training included private and tertiary studies
    from 1973 - ‘79 and European study tours 1975, '78-'79, '86 (Scholarship), '91, studying and painting in
    England, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Austria and Greece. Various study and painting tours
    undertaken within Australia.

    Invited to tutor for various art societies including the Cheltenham Art Group (1977-:) the Box Hill Art Group
    (1987-:), he has assisted many regional arts organisations throughout Melbourne and Victoria with
    workshops, demonstrations and lectures. Establishing numerous Community Arts painting classes in
    Melbourne's northern and western suburbs of Footscray, Williamstown and Essendon, (1981-'98) along with
    private classes in Kew (1978-'80) relocated to Balwyn (1981-:) he has conducted painting classes since the
    age of 20. Paul has served on the judging panels of several national art awards, particularly an ongoing
    commitment as Chairman of Australia's premier award for traditional painting, the coveted A.M.E. Bale
    Travelling Scholarship,  along with a great many independent judging, demonstrating and guest lecturer
    appointments throughout Victoria and interstate.























    Elected President of the Victorian Artists Society in 1998 and serving until 2003, he is a Fellow of the V.A.S.-
    awarded "for your outstanding contribution and distinguished service to the arts"- and  has been a tutor with
    the Society's teaching program since 1990. Exhibiting with the VAS since 1976 (aged19) he was elevated to
    VAS Signatory Membership in 1991, elected to the Society's Council in 1992 and has since served on various
    sub-committees as Convenor. He has curated a number of retrospective exhibitions of significant Australian
    artists on behalf of the VAS and has served as Editor of the Society's publications from 1997 -'03. Invited to
    membership of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society in 1997, he was elected President of that society in
    2003, and holds various Fellowships, and Honorary memberships, locally and internationally.  Elected a
    Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London in 1999, he is a member of the Royal Art Society of New South
    Wales and one of 500 individuals worldwide to be admitted to the Order of International Fellowship,
    England. Appointed an  Honorary member of the Hobsons Bay Art Society ( formerly the Altona Artists
    Association) in 1984 and  more recently appointed Honorary Member of the Glen Eira Cheltenham Art
    Group Inc, and The Box Hill Art Group Inc., he is Founder of the Moonee Valley Watercolour Painting Group
    (1998) and is a past  member of several regional Societies.

    Exhibiting since 1976, he has held six solo exhibitions in Melbourne and participated in many group and
    invitation exhibitions and competitions.

    Named in the Queens Birthday Honours List 2005, Paul was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM),
    "For service to the Visual Arts as a Painter and Lecturer and to the Victorian Artists Society".

    The recipient of over one hundred awards for painting including; the Camberwell Travel Scholarship 1986
    for European study, Outstanding Achievement Award (UK) ’98," in honour of an outstanding contribution to
    art", the “Norman Kaye Memorial Medallion” ’98 & ‘99 awarded by peer vote at Victorian Artists Society
    exhibitions, Distinguished Leadership Award (USA) '99 "For an Outstanding Contribution to Contemporary
    Society", and the major awards at Bright, Mt Waverley and Mildura in 1999, Royal Overseas League 2000
    The Cardinia Shire award 2001, VAS Artist of the Year Award and Medallion 2001- as highest vote recipient
    for the year at Victorian Artists Society exhibitions, the Alexandra Art Exhibition Open Award 2002, amongst
    many other awards and honours.  His work, including commissioned portraits, flower studies and landscape
    painting is represented in Private, Corporate, Institutional, Municipal and Regional Gallery collections in
    Victoria and private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
